FAQ
What is hyperfractional gold?
Gold in amounts far smaller than a coin or bar. Goldback describes hyper-fractional gold as under 1/10 troy ounce. Goldbacks, Aurums and Redbacks all hold a precise layer of 24-karat gold on a polymer bill, so tiny amounts of gold can be owned, traded or spent.
How are Goldbacks valued?
By the exchange rate, not the melt value. Goldback, Inc. publishes an official exchange rate every day (updated at 10 AM MST) for 1 Goldback. Every denomination is worth its number times that rate, so a 5 is worth five times a 1, and the rate is the same for every state series.
Why is the exchange rate higher than the gold inside?
Goldback says the rate reflects the current market value of gold plus the labor, technology and counterfeiting security needed to make small, precise, spendable denominations. Its FAQ compares it to lumber: a 2×4 costs less than the same wood made into thousands of toothpicks.
Do I lose that premium when I spend a Goldback?
Goldback's FAQ says no: value is tied to the average exchange rate published on its website, so if you buy at the average rate you can generally spend at the same rate on the same day.
Is there an exchange rate for Aurums or Redbacks?
No. Valaurum doesn't publish an exchange or buyback rate for Aurum, and the Texas Bullion Depository doesn't publish one for Modern Redbacks. Aurums sell at a premium over the gold they contain (compare Valaurum's listed retail with the melt value). Redbacks are collectible precious metal products, are not legal tender, and are sold through the Depository's authorized retailers.
What units are these sold in?
Each maker uses its own unit. Goldbacks are counted in Goldbacks (1 GB = 1/1000 troy ounce), Aurums in milligrams, and Redbacks in centigrams (1 cg = 10 mg). The calculator converts between Goldbacks, milligrams, centigrams, grams, grains and troy ounces.
So what is melt value for?
Reference only. Melt is the gold content times the spot price of gold, about what the metal alone is worth. Hyperfractional gold is made to be spent, traded and collected, so it is valued above melt.
How do I know one is authentic?
Goldbacks carry serial numbers, intricate artwork, UV-reactive ink (2025 and forward) and a raised, reversed image on the back. Aurum carry unique serial numbers, micro-printing you can check with a magnifying glass, and a matte-and-shine "dimensional gold" reverse. Each Modern Redback is individually numbered and bears the seal of the State of Texas.
